The Girls Of Riverdale: Tina

Like many youths growing up in the late 80s/early 90s with a surfeit of spare time and a lack of basic social skills, I devoted a ridiculous amount of time to reading Archie comics. And if you did too then you know the undeniable truth: Riverdale USA is a mecca for teenage boys. It was artist Dan Decarlo's heyday, and all the girls (except poor Big Ethel) were top shelf. His lovingly rendered females gave hope to boys everywhere - someplace, you would think, there are girls like this.

One of my favorites was Tina, the punk rock girl who appeared for only one story ("Out Of The Ordinary" in "Archie" Issue 354, January 1988). The whole premise of the story is Archie goes through increasingly bizarre costumes to try and win a date with Tina, a new girl in town. It turns out she moves again before he has a chance to succeed, but not before Reggie gets a mohawk in an attempt to beat Archie's time. It also has this great line by Miss Grundy:

Anywho, here's some drawings of Tina by the masterful Dan Decarlo:

Top shelf, as always.

Juggle

I thought I'd try my hand at an Illustration Friday topic. This week it's Juggle.

Thanks to fellow Tampa artist Dan Boyd, whose F.A.C.A. Arena Girl entry I shamelessly ripped off.

Sunday Shootout

Didn't get to spend much time this weekend drawing as I went over to Orlando for a comic con yesterday and had to do some classes today.

Here's a little Sunday night unwinding sketch for ya

I also threw some color on the Girl with Gravity Defying Hair. Presumably her shoes are the Cylon brand.

Pretty low key I know - the biggest thing I worked on this week was an entry for the F.A.C.A. Arena Girl competition - you can go see my entry along with much better stuff over at Fist-A-Cuffs. My entry is the one that looks like this:

The Five Minute Batman

I was up late last night drawing when I should have been sleeping so in an effort to convince myself to turn off the lights I set a limit of five minutes to draw something - I picked Batman:

Bonus pic: I like this one but I have no idea how she managed to get her hair to defy gravity like that

Why Not?

Aw heck, it's the weekend, why not a little extra? Here's another three girls:

Unsolicited Sketch Dump V: The Work Edition

I've been trying to use all the time I've spent stuck at work recently to good purpose, playing around with an inking style of thick outlines, thin detail lines. Unfortunately the only marker I could find in the office was a really thick one which gave off enough fumes to choke a small horse, forcing me to do the outline very, very fast. Below are a couple sketches I did over the past couple days - sorry for the lined paper.

She Hulk & September Scheduling

September 15th is the magic day - not so much because it's my birthday (which it is) but because it's the project deadline at work which has monopolized all my time over the past couple weeks. I've barely had time to squeak in a sketch here and there, nevermind anything more polished.

To keep the blog (and my drawing hand) alive, here's a She-Hulk sketch (been catching up with the trades in the five minutes I have in bed before falling asleep). Once next weekend comes and goes I'll have time to get it into Photoshop for a little coloring and cleanup.
